Today was the first day of class. Despite my nerves, the first day was enjoyable and quenched several of my fears about assignments. The professor, Dr. Holder, is straight-forward and knowledgeable. He likes sarcastic jokes, perhaps that’s one reason I like him so far. He mentioned a PhD Comics; developed by, Jorge Cham, a Stanford Professor. I probably should not have used “Uncle Google” to search for that after class was released because I spent an hour reading comics. Was that an hour wasted? Nope, that hour was a time of mental decompression and relaxation. Proverbs 17:22 (ASV) states, “A cheerful heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth up the bones.”
During the class, we learned several tools to help make our research and writing process easier. We learned about EndNote, various education databases, and the proper research process. Dr. Holder emphasized critical thinking. He noted to look for how’s, why’s, and differences in articles. He shared his mantra with us: “The purpose of technology in education is to make the learning process more efficient” (Dr. David Holder). Technology is a tool that can become a burden or asset. Effective usage is key.
One assignment in the class is to write a blog post each night. I considered creating a different blog for this course. Then I decided to include this assignment on my personal blog so that other parents, who may be considering going back to school, will see that it is possible to accomplish. This is one purpose for creating my personal portion of the blog: to demonstrate how I attempt to do it all without completely losing it. Like all moms, I have many roles and obligations. Revelations 12:11 talks about the power of testimony. I believe that it is human nature to seek out testimonies of others who have walked a similar path. My goal is not to brag about my own accomplishments (that will come for a brief time, when I have Ed. D. after my name) but to share that it is possible to go back to school and be mom & wife.
The most difficult part of this course is being away from my kids. My husband is enjoying spending time with them. The week away will allow me to focus my time on the assignments to ensure I am able to meet the course deadlines.
