Dyslexia therapy is provided using a systematic, explicit, and multisensory approach to literacy instruction. I am in my first year of CALT certification. For more information about CALT, please visit here. However, as a mother of children who have dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, I understand the struggles a parent and child encounters.
One of the program that I use is Take Flight. This program was developed by the Scottish Rite. It focuses on reading, spelling, cursive writing, and reading comprehension. Instruction is provided in a systematically, explicitly, and using multisensory methods. For more information about Take Flight, please visit the Scottish Rite’s website.
The number of sessions required each week depends upon the needs of the individual child. Some children who have severe dyslexia will need more sessions and time on each topic, which could be split between two sessions. Some children who have less severe dyslexia may not require as many sessions. Take Flight was designed for use by Academic Language Therapists for children with dyslexia ages 7 and older. The two-year program is designed to be taught four days per week (60 minutes per day) or five days per week (45 minutes per day). It is intended for one-on-one or small group instruction with no more than six students per class.
I contract with another reading intervention group who offers Lexercise for dyslexia intervention. Each week, your Lexercise therapist conducts a live 45-minute web-conferencing session with you and your child, often using Zoom. During the initial part of the session, your therapist reviews the material to ensure your child has mastered the week's practice content. Following the review, the therapist introduces new material for the upcoming lesson, using a combination of interactive online resources and physical pencil-and-paper activities. After the live session, the therapist customizes the practice activities for the week ahead.
IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) offers a structured approach to teaching writing, focusing on clear, step-by-step methods to develop students' skills. It emphasizes the use of models, outlines, and stylistic techniques to help students organize their thoughts and enhance their writing. The program is designed to build confidence and competence in writing through consistent practice and detailed instruction. My classes are available through Kepler Education.
